Missed the TVET college deadline for 2027? Which colleges are still open
Short answer, as of Thursday 5 November 2026: the national TVET application window for 2027 closed on 30 September 2026 (SAnews). That does not mean every door is shut. Some public colleges are still taking occupational programme applications for a January 2027 start, many courses run again in July, and engineering trimesters can open more than once a year. What has closed for new applicants is NSFAS: the 2027 funding cycle closed on 31 October 2026 with no extensions (NSFAS).
If you missed September, do not wait until registration week in January hoping for a walk-in. Use the November occupational windows that are still open, then plan a July intake if you need a second chance.
Why "TVET closed" is often wrong
TVET colleges do not all run on one university-style calendar. Four common programme types behave differently:
| Programme type | Typical structure | Missed January? |
|---|---|---|
| NC(V) Levels 2 to 4 | Full academic year | Usually wait for 2028, or ask about late or space-available places |
| Report 191 Business Studies N4 to N6 | Semesters (Jan to June, July to Dec) | Often a July intake |
| Report 191 Engineering N1 to N6 | Trimesters (~10 weeks) | Often more than one intake a year |
| Occupational / QCTO programmes | Set per qualification | Windows can open outside the main NC(V) dates |
That is why a college can say "2027 applications closed" for NC(V) while still advertising occupational programmes in November. Always check the programme, not only the college name.
Colleges with open windows right now (checked 5 November 2026)
These are examples confirmed against the college's own site or official poster. Dates change quickly. If a third-party list says "open" and the college site does not, trust the college.
| College | What is open | Closes | How to apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vuselela TVET College (North West) | Non-trade occupational programmes for January 2027 (12 programmes advertised) | 13 November 2026 at 23:59 | vuselelacollege.co.za |
| Central Johannesburg TVET College (CJC) | Selected occupational programmes at Parktown Campus (ECD Practitioner, Bookkeeper, Office Administrator, Marketing Coordinator) | 20 November 2026 (window from 3 November) | cjc.edu.za Apply, then Local South African Students |
| Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC) | Official apply portal is live for new applicants (placement test, then online application). Recent college notices advertise January 2027 occupational programmes across six campuses | Confirm the closing date with the campus before you rely on it | ewc.edu.za/apply.html |
Vuselela states on its homepage that January 2027 applications close on 13 November 2026 at 23:59 (Vuselela). Call 018 406 7800.
CJC published an official Parktown occupational poster for 2027 with the window 3 to 20 November 2026: Early Childhood Development Practitioner (NQF 4, 1 year, Grade 12 with Maths), Bookkeeper (NQF 5, 3 years, Grade 12 with Maths or Accounting), Office Administrator (NQF 5, 3 years, Grade 12 with English) and Marketing Coordinator (NQF 5, 1 year, Grade 12 with English). Apply only via cjc.edu.za. Phone: 011 351 6000.
EWC keeps a live Apply Now page (placement test, then upload ID, results and proof of residence). Campus phones are on that page. Ask which occupational programmes still have January 2027 space before you treat any secondary closing date as final.
If your nearest college is not in the table, phone the campus that offers your course and ask three questions: Is there still a January 2027 place on this programme? When does the next July or trimester window open? Is this qualification NSFAS-fundable? The full list of public TVET colleges is on the DHET site.
Your plan for the next two weeks
- Pick a programme type, not only a campus. Decide whether you want NC(V), a Report 191 N course, or an occupational / trade qualification. Entry requirements differ (some occupational programmes accept Grade 10 or 11; many need Grade 12).
- Apply this week if a November window fits. Vuselela closes on 13 November. CJC Parktown occupational closes on 20 November. Have PDFs ready before you start: certified ID, latest school results or matric certificate, proof of residence.
- Complete the placement screening where required. CJC and EWC both make a pre-entry or placement assessment part of the new-student process. Do it yourself. Do not pay anyone to "complete" it for you.
- Save every reference number and keep your cellphone and email working. Offers and document requests arrive there.
- From March 2027, watch for July intakes on college websites and official Facebook pages if you miss January.
Example scenarios (illustrations, not real applicants):
- Amahle, Grade 12 in Klerksdorp, missed the September NC(V) window. She wants office work. Best move this week: check Vuselela's non-trade occupational list for Office Administrator or Management Assistant, confirm the campus, and submit before 13 November.
- Johan, Pretoria, wants Bookkeeper and already has Grade 12 with Accounting. Best move: CJC Parktown occupational window (closes 20 November) and phone EWC campuses that advertise Bookkeeper to ask about space.
- Naledi's cousin, no NSFAS application. Even with a college offer, a new NSFAS 2027 application is not possible after 31 October. Plan fees, SETA or learnership routes, and college financial aid before accepting.
The money problem: NSFAS has closed for new 2027 applicants
NSFAS 2027 applications closed on 31 October 2026 at 23:59. NSFAS said there would be no extensions, and late applications cannot be accepted (NSFAS, gov.za, 28 October 2026). Getting a TVET offer in November does not reopen NSFAS.
- If you already applied: log in to myNSFAS, watch the tracker, and upload anything NSFAS asks for within the time given (document requests are typically 30 working days). See our NSFAS 2027 closed guide.
- If you did not apply: ask the college financial aid office what else exists for your programme (SETA funding, learnerships, college hardship funds). For teaching routes later, Funza Lushaka closes on 31 January 2027 for new applicants once you have a BEd offer.
- What NSFAS usually covers for qualifying TVET students (confirm current amounts on NSFAS, because guidelines are updated): registration and tuition on funded programmes, plus personal care, and either accommodation or transport. Published TVET allowance figures on the NSFAS bursary page include personal care of R2,900 a year, transport up to R7,350 a year (within 40 km), and accommodation bands of R24,000 (urban), R18,900 (peri-urban) or R15,750 (rural) a year (NSFAS bursary scheme, NSFAS TVET funding).
NSFAS funds Ministerial-approved programmes at public TVET colleges (typically NC(V), Report 191 and Pre-Learning Programme routes). Not every occupational qualification is automatically funded. Ask whether your exact SAQA qualification is on the funded list before you budget as if NSFAS will pay.
How to apply to a public TVET college (when a window is open)
These steps match what CJC, EWC and Vuselela ask on their official apply pages.
- Go to the college's own website. Type the address yourself. Prefer
.edu.zaor the URL on the DHET college list. - Find Apply for new students (returning students usually use a different link).
- Complete any placement or career screening first if required.
- Enter your names exactly as on your ID, plus a working email and cellphone.
- Choose the programme and campus. Not every campus offers every course.
- Upload clear scans: certified ID, latest results, proof of residence.
- Submit and keep the confirmation. An application is not an offer.
July 2027: your main Plan B
If January is full, mid-year is often the real second chance. In 2026, colleges that ran July or second-semester intakes included Ehlanzeni, Northlink, Sedibeng, Capricorn, Nkangala, False Bay and Eastcape Midlands for selected Business Studies, engineering trimester or occupational programmes. Those 2027 windows have not been published yet. Use 2026 as a guide: most mid-year applications opened and closed between April and June.
From March 2027, check your nearest colleges weekly. NC(V) usually will not be in that round. Report 191 Business Studies N4 to N6 and some occupational programmes often will.
Still stuck after results? CAS, not the old CACH
DHET stopped the Central Application Clearing House from the 2026 academic year and replaced it with the Central Application Service (CAS) (gov.za). After matric results in January, message the official CAS WhatsApp line on 081 308 4196 if you still have no place. Do not make it your only plan. If you also missed university deadlines, see where you can still apply for 2027.
Scam check before you pay or share anything
November to February is peak season for fake "guaranteed placement" agents.
- Applying to a public TVET college through its official portal is normally free. NSFAS applications are also free.
- Never share your password, OTP or ID documents with someone who offers to apply for you.
- Pay fees only into the college's official account details from its own site or finance office.
- Report NSFAS fraud to speakup@nsfas.org.za. Read our full never pay to apply guide.
Your next step tonight
Open vuselelacollege.co.za if you are in or near the North West, or cjc.edu.za for Parktown occupational programmes, and check whether a listed course matches your results. If neither fits, phone the EWC campus nearest you via ewc.edu.za/apply.html and ask what is still open for January. Set a reminder for 12 November (day before Vuselela closes) and 19 November (day before CJC Parktown occupational closes).
